5 Reasons You Should Be Setting Business Goals

With the end of the year coming in fast, most people start looking ahead and thinking about how they can make things different in the next year. Turning inward and thinking about what they accomplished this year, what worked and where they could have done better….

While looking back can be beneficial to see how far you’ve come, it can be a good idea to also look forward and set intentions for the new year.

Setting intentions or goals for yourself or your business can be one of the most important things you can do if you want to set a purpose or a path for your business for these 5 reasons:

 

1. Goals Give You Direction

Goals provide you with a sort of roadmap. You give yourself the final destination and then work backward to figure out the path to achievement creating a roadmap to success. By creating simple steps for phasing out your projects, you’re ensuring you or your team isn’t overwhelmed, and that you don’t miss any steps along the way to achieving your goals. Setting those clearly defined goals will also make a lot of your decisions throughout the year easier to make essentially putting your decision-making on autopilot. Does the course of action fit your goals? Yes or No? Having those goals well-defined, and the roadmap laid out allows those decisions to become more clear which in turn allows you more time and energy to focus on taking the more action steps you can to ensure you achieve your goals.

2. Goals Give You Control

Defining out your business goals gives you more control to see them. To sort them. What are your short-term goals vs your long-term goals? Which goals are most important now vs later? Which goals are your business ready to tackle vs which need more vetting or preparation? A lot of times we set arbitrary goals for our business before fully understanding how to achieve them or we set goals that are too lofty for where our business currently is. Growing too fast or leveraging our businesses in ways we aren’t ready to handle can sometimes be the offset of that arbitrary setting. By laying out our goals we have more control to organize them and create a path that makes better sense for our business both now and in the longer term of 3 to 5 years even, or beyond. When we set our goals up this way, we are able to work out what we really want and to create that game plan for our business, to grow on our terms and in the most healthy way possible.

3. Goals Provide Motivation

Completing every goal big or small is a win and that makes achieving goals incredibly motivating for you and your employees. By using goals to shape your business, you allow yourself and your staff to have lots of these victories that keep your business on the right path toward bigger goals.

4. Goals Create Employee Engagement

Implementing goals should be a top-down effort. By sharing the goal setting and creating big and small goals for every department, and even employees in your business you open the lines of communication and keep yourself and your team on task throughout the year. Sharing the goal-setting will also allow you to set up buy-in through an environment of teamwork within your organization that gives everyone a part to play toward the same endgame rather than having employees coast from action to action without purpose. Seeing those hard days paying off toward unlocking even a small victory allows your employees to see their hard work pays off and the part they play in the bigger picture. Be sure to celebrate those victories both big and small with your team along the way.

5. Goals Give You a Way to Track Progress

Goals can be a really powerful way to track your progress and company growth. You set the goal, you create your game plan to get there, and now you have a way to track your progress along the way to ensure the train stays on the track or to correct measures before they go off the rails too far.

The key to goals is to regularly sit down with your team and track and analyze the progress, celebrate the wins, uncover the issues, and correct them to get back on track. You can utilize the data to create new game plans for goals in the future and to forecast ahead for better planning.

Goals also serve as a way to keep both you and your team accountable. Tracking progress enables you to ensure your team is performing where they should, to keep them on track to make adjustments, to celebrate the victories with them, and to hold them accountable for any pitfalls. With goals set, the analytics won’t lie, and when you honestly reflect you will be able to see if the actions being taken are getting the business closer to achieving its goals, or farther. If the goals are unrealistic, or not lofty enough if you’ve got the right team in place, or the right strategy…etc.

Setting goals is literally one of the most important things you can do for your business. One of the biggest reasons that so many businesses fail is because owners fail to plan.
